I fell down a manhole. Surely I can claim for this?

I've just been walking along my street and when I stepped on a manhole it completely gave way. My whole right leg disappeared inside and I fell forwards and hit my head on the concrete. Luckily I was able to stop myself falling in. Surely someone is to blame for this? Can I make a claim??

You can indeed claim for falling down a manhole. It sounds as if this one may have been defective. It'll be worth checking or asking around to see if anybody was seen working in or around the manhole recently. If so, get their details if you can--a company name will suffice.

Go back and take some pictures of the scene too, as well as pictures of your injuries. And speaking of injuries, if you haven't already done so, get yourself checked out by your GP just to double-check you haven't suffered more damage than you think. It's also helpful for evidence purposes too, as it'll confirm in your medical records that the accident happened.
