How can I claim for slipping over in a supermarket?

Hi

I was in a supermarket last week, I won't say which one, and I slipped over on some spilt washing up liquid when I was walking down an aisle. I cracked my knee on the shelving unit and a few of the shelves came loose and fell on top of me. I ended up in A&E and had to have stitches for a cut to my head. Can I claim for this?

Hi Jerrome

Thanks for your question and sorry to hear about your accident. It sounds nasty, to say the least.

You can of course sue for a slip and fall like this in a supermarket and depending on the circumstances, you could have a good claim. It'll be important to show that the supermarket staff should have spotted the spillage and cleaned it up, or if it was spotted, that it should have been cleaned up much sooner, with warning signs put out to highlight the hazard.

There could also be an issue with the stability of the shelves. It sounds like they fell on top of you quite easily and this may be a breach of duty issue as well.

My best advice for you is to give our team of friendly and knowledgeable advisers a call on 0800 073 8804. Explain to them what happened and they'll assess your case and connect you with one of our specialist solicitors. You can also do so via our live chat, bottom right, or click here to find out more.

I hope that helps!

Edward
