Do I need to make a report to the police to claim compensation for a road traffic accident?

Is it possible to get compensation after a car accident without police report?
I was coming back from work and the driver in another car failed to give the right of way so he hit me. I didn't call the police or for ambulance because I was in shock and I just wanted to go home.

I have suffered severe whiplash and I would now like to make a claim but will I be able too if I did not make a police report or seek medical attention?
