Road traffic accident in work van caused by collegue, can I claim compensation for whiplash?

I was a passenger in a road traffic accident and I have suffered whiplash.

I had been picked up by a friend in the company van, in a working capacity which is standard practice in our job and was on my way to the site when he crashed into a car at a busy junction, the driver of the vehicle I was in was at fault as he went into the back of another car while rushing to make it to work on time.

I hurt my back in the accident, now I lower back pain and neck ache plus muscular bruising to my shoulders, chest and stomach, the injuries were mild but ive been forced to take time off work loosing wages.

I don't want to claim against my friend and co worker causing him legal troubles or to get fired, but I do wish to claim compensation for my injuries and loss of earnings, could I try and get a pay out from my employer to cover the expense of my damages without getting us both laid off site? and just wanted to know if I lose the case do I need to pay the solicitor fee too?
